Northern Schools celebrate Catholic Education Week Mass

Catholic Schools in the north of the state gathered for Mass celebrated by Archbishop Julian, to mark Catholic Education Week.

The Mass was celebrated at St Brendan-Shaw College on Wednesday 17 August.

During the homily the Archbishop reflected on the theme of Catholic Education Week, Catholic Education: Opening the doors of Mercy. He spoke of his recent pilgrimage with young Tasmanians to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland.

“The city of Krakow offered us two saints – St Faustina and the message of Divine Mercy, and St John Paul II, one of the great popes of history,” he said. “And nearby in the sombre places of unspeakable evil and suffering [during World War II) a saint was born, St Maximillian Kolbe.”

Archbishop Julian reminded students that evil never has the last word and that mercy is a powerful expression of love.

“Evil is overcome by mercy. In a simple [Divine Mercy] image God offered the Polish people a sign that evil can be endured. In the midst of suffering a person can say, “Jesus, I trust in you,” he said.

In closing, Archbishop Julian encouraged student to become more merciful in their own lives.
